Fall Weekend Events in Sullivan County, NY: A Town-by-Town Guide

On October 4, 2026, three separate towns in Sullivan County are throwing an Oktoberfest. Not one big county fair with satellite events. Three unconnected parties, in three unconnected places, on the exact same Saturday.

Roscoe Beer Co. is running its Trout Town Oktoberfest, a free, family-friendly tradition it has hosted since 2014, complete with a hay maze, pumpkin picking, and live music, with a Bloody Mary Brunch the next morning for anyone who overdid the apple barrel. Two Farms Brewing in Bloomingburg is hosting its own version the same weekend, German food and beer alongside a keg toss and stein-holding contest, plus hot air balloon rides on Saturday. And in Monticello, Holiday Mountain is running its second annual Oktoberfest, a 21-and-over evening built for adults who want a night out without the kids' pumpkin patch attached.

Three towns did not coordinate a shared festival weekend by accident. They each built their own version of the same tradition, on the same date, with almost nothing in common except the name. That's the pattern worth understanding if you live here: Sullivan County's fall calendar isn't one season stretched across a county. It's a string of towns each claiming a weekend and making it theirs.

What's Wrapping Up Right Now

Before the Oktoberfest weekend even arrives, Narrowsburg is finishing its own signature event. The Big Eddy Film Festival, run by the Delaware Arts Alliance, runs September 25 through 28, screening independent films from around the world inside restored historic venues built from brick that dates back to the late 1800s. If you haven't caught a screening yet, this is the last weekend to do it.

The festival is a good early marker of how this county's fall works. Narrowsburg doesn't compete with Roscoe's beer garden or Callicoon's art crowd. It picked film, put it in its oldest buildings, and built a following around it. Nobody else in the county is trying to run a film festival the same week.

The Week Between

After the film festival closes and before the Oktoberfest weekend hits, there's a quieter stretch, and locals tend to fill it with trails rather than events. The Tusten Mountain Trail near Narrowsburg is a common choice this time of year, a hike that opens onto a wide view of the Delaware River valley without requiring an all-day mountain commitment. Farther east, the Frick Pond loop near Livingston Manor covers about 2.2 miles through woods and wetlands, an easy option if you want the changing leaves without a summit push. For something rockier, the Neversink River Unique Area has a gorge cut through with waterfalls, including Denton Falls, Mullet Brook Falls, and High Falls, all reachable on the same outing.

None of these require festival tickets or a specific weekend. They're the connective tissue between the county's bigger claimed dates, the thing you do on the Saturday that doesn't belong to anyone yet.

Callicoon Takes the Following Saturday

A week after the Oktoberfest tripleheader, on Saturday, October 11, Callicoon runs its Art Walk. Last year's event pulled in 106 artists, musicians, and performers across 32 locations on Main Street, along with ten musical acts split between two stages, three theater performances, a film screening, and a pair of large-scale art installations. That's not a small-town craft fair. That's a hamlet turning its entire commercial strip into a single-day gallery.

Callicoon has also been building out its food scene to match the crowd the Art Walk draws. Grizzly Bagels turns out small-batch New York style bagels for anyone grabbing breakfast before the walk starts, and Navor Koken has brought Scandinavian and northern German cooking to a stretch of Main Street where that kind of menu didn't exist a few years back. If Roscoe's identity is beer and trout, and Narrowsburg's is film, Callicoon's is art and a widening food lineup that gives people a reason to stay past the last gallery stop.

Bethel Woods Doesn't Take a Weekend Off

Every town so far has picked one Saturday and built around it. Bethel Woods does something different. Its Harvest Festival runs every Sunday from August 30 through October 4, 2026, drawing more than 100 farmers, crafters, and makers along with a corn maze, wagon rides, live music, and pet adoptions with the Sullivan County SPCA. The moment that closes, Peace, Love & Pumpkins picks up on October 9 and runs through November 1, a walk-through Halloween experience with thousands of hand-carved jack-o-lanterns winding through the same grounds where the original Woodstock festival took place in 1969.

There's no gap between the two. One Sunday closes the harvest season and, five days later, a different event opens on the same acreage. While the hamlets around it each get one weekend, Bethel Woods runs a continuous fall calendar of its own, which is part of why it functions as the county's anchor rather than one more stop on the circuit.

What the Calendar Actually Rewards

None of this is really about foliage, even though the hills are doing their part. It's about towns treating a single fall weekend as an identity. Roscoe picked beer and trout a decade ago and has stuck with it. Narrowsburg built a film festival around buildings other places would have torn down. Callicoon turned Main Street into a gallery once a year and is now backing it with a stronger restaurant lineup. Bethel Woods just runs continuously and lets everyone else orbit around it.

That specialization shows up in where new businesses are choosing to plant themselves, too. El Sombrero, the Tex-Mex spot that built a following in Rock Hill, opened a second location this year on Horseshoe Lake Road in Kauneonga Lake, close enough to Bethel Woods to catch concertgoers heading to or from a show. The Woodstock Way Groovy Eatery leaned into the same geography, opening near the Monticello, Mongaup Valley, and Bethel corridor specifically to catch people driving up Route 17B to the venue. Businesses aren't spreading out evenly across the county. They're clustering around whichever town already has a reason for people to show up.

If you live here, the useful takeaway isn't a list of dates to memorize. It's that picking a Saturday in Sullivan County means picking a town's personality for the day, not just an event. October 4 alone forces a real choice between a free family Oktoberfest in Roscoe, a hot air balloon and stein-holding contest in Bloomingburg, or a 21-and-over evening in Monticello. That's not overlap. That's three towns making sure their weekend doesn't look like anyone else's.

If you're weighing a move to one of these towns down the road, or just want a local read on how a particular hamlet's calendar and character line up with what you're looking for, James J Cosenza knows this county well enough to tell you which weekend fits which town, not just which house is for sale in it.
